   Van an toàn được thiết kế để bảo vệ các đường ống hơi nước, khí nén, khí đốt và các chất lỏng khác không bị quá áp.

   Van xả (relief valves) và van an toàn (back pressure regulators, safety valves) hay còn gọi là van xả ngược là chỉ một thiết bị nhưng có tên khác nhau do cách sử dụng khác nhau. Van xả mở cho hơi nước hay khí nén trong ống bay ra ngoài khi áp lực vượt quá mức định sẵn.  Trong khi đó, van xả ngược không xả chất lỏng ra ngoài để giảm áp mà lại dẫn ngược một phần chất lỏng ở nơi áp cao quay trở về vùng áp thấp trong cùng hệ thống.

   Bên trong van an toàn có lò xo tác dụng lực lên đĩa van (hoặc màng van) để giữ cho van ở tư thế đóng. Khi áp lực chất lỏng vượt qua mức đã định, lực do chất lỏng tác dụng vào đĩa sẽ lớn hơn lực lò xo, van mở để chất lỏng thoát ra và áp suất do đó sẽ giảm xuống dưới mức đã định.

   Pressure relief valves are designed to provide protection from over-pressure in steam, gas, air and liquid lines. Relief valves and back pressure regulators are the same device, only differing in application. The pressure relief valve "lets off steam" when safe pressures are exceeded, then closes again when pressure drops to a preset level. A back pressure regulator maintains upstream pressure at the desired setting by opening to allow excess upstream pressure to flow downstream.

   One spring is used to maintain a constant force acting on the backside of the valve disk or diaphragm, causing the valve to be normally closed. When the force exerted by the process stream (i.e. fluid pressure) on the valve disk is greater than the constant force exerted by the spring, the valve opens allowing process fluid to exit the valve until the fluid pressure falls below the preset value
